Principal’s Address: The Wisdom of Epoché

Good morning, students. Today marks the successful and safe conclusion of our first term. Over the past few months, I believe each of you has run this race with utmost dedication—whether in your academic pursuits, club activities, or school events. I would like to express my deepest appreciation for your hard work and perseverance.

Tomorrow, your eagerly awaited summer vacation begins. Having a significant block of time offers a magnificent opportunity to contemplate your future, pursue your academic goals, or immerse yourselves in your clubs. At the same time, however, this season can easily breed anxiety, impatience, and various pressures. You may find yourselves overwhelmed by thoughts like, "I must do this," "I am still falling short," or "Others are advancing much further than I am."

To help you navigate these feelings, I would like to share a certain word for you to keep in your hearts this summer. It is a concept used by ancient Greek philosophers, known as "Epoché."

In Japanese, it is translated as "judgment suspension" (handan horyu). Put simply, it means "to temporarily refrain from seeing everything in black and white" or "to gently hit the pause button on your racing thoughts."

In today’s world, your daily lives are inundated with an immense volume of information. A single glance at social media reveals the dazzling achievements of others, while your smartphones constantly dictate what the "correct" way to live should be. Consequently, our minds tend to unconsciously judge ourselves harshly, whispering that we are inadequate or that we must produce immediate results.

But ask yourselves: Are those anxieties and doubts something that truly require a definitive verdict right this moment? The more we desperately try to judge and find a definitive answer, the deeper we wander into a labyrinth of confusion.

This is precisely where "Epoché" comes to our aid. When you catch yourself feeling anxious, try mentally invoking this concept: "Let us practice Epoché." Stop labeling your situation as "good" or "bad" for a moment, and simply set that judgment aside. To borrow a concept from mathematics, it is like "placing the problem inside parentheses." Or, in the context of home economics, it is like "leaving a hot dish aside to let it cool down."

For instance, you might think, "I might be lagging behind my peers in my career preparations or assignments... but let me practice Epoché on that judgment for now." Or, "My mock exam results were discouraging... but let me suspend my despair for the time being." The same wisdom applies to human relationships. By relinquishing the need to see everything in absolute black and white, and by simplifying your thoughts, do you not feel a sense of relief? Do you not feel a weight being lifted from your shoulders?

The energy of our brains is finite. If we deplete our mental resources by constantly worrying over what to do, we will have no strength left to channel into what truly matters. By choosing to defer our worries—that is, to practice Epoché—and clearing a space within our minds, we can, for the first time, focus one hundred percent of our energy on the task immediately before us today.

Life is full of questions that do not yield immediate answers. This summer, I encourage you to intentionally embrace the value of leaving some things undecided. Simplifying your mindset and committing yourself fully to the single step you can take today will become the very engine of your great growth.

Please take utmost care of your health and make this summer vacation safe, productive, and meaningful. I look forward to seeing you all return in the second term, standing taller, matured, and in high spirits.

Thank you very much.
